Simplesmente conhecido como João Ferreira Almeida, se converteu ao protestantismo muito jovem e viveu na Asia, na Indonésia e Malásia, ambas possessões holandesas no Oriente. João Ferreira foi o primeiro a traduzir a Bíblia para a língua portuguesa. Em 1654, completou todo o Novo testamento, que foi publicado pela primeira vez em 1681.
Almeida começou a traduzir o Antigo Testamento, chegou atê Ezequiel 48.21 e faleceu sem acabar a obra à qual havia dedicado a vida inteira. Jacobus op den Akker, pastor holandês, completou a tradução do Antigo testamento. A Bíblia completa foi publicada em 1819.
Em 1898, uma nova edição foi publicada com o nome de “Revista e corrigida” e em meados do século XX foi revista, atualizada e publicada com o nome de “Revista e Atualizada”
A Bíblia João Ferreira está dividida em duas seções principais, o Antigo e o Novo Testamento.
